In an unexpected turn of events, Dominica has officially withdrawn from hosting matches in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, citing logistical challenges in completing renovation work on crucial practice and match venues within the stipulated time frame. The decision was communicated by the country’s sports ministry, which deemed it “imprudent” to commit to hosting games without ensuring the necessary infrastructure enhancements.
Dominica, initially slated to host matches at Windsor Park Sports Stadium, was among the seven Caribbean nations selected as hosts for the tournament. The T20 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States, will feature 20 teams and is scheduled to unfold from June 4 to June 30, 2024.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has expressed understanding of Dominica’s predicament, emphasizing the need for flexibility in adapting to unforeseen circumstances during large-scale tournaments. Collaborating closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), CWI is actively working on adjusting the tournament schedule to accommodate the change, with official details anticipated to be released imminently.
Tournament director Fawwaz Baksh acknowledged the challenges inherent in organizing such expansive events, stating, “When hosting tournaments of this scale, it is inevitable that circumstances will arise which will require the organizers to adapt and alter plans.”
The West Indies, having last hosted the T20 World Cup in 2010, three years after successfully organizing the 50-over World Cup, will once again take center stage. This event marks a historic occasion as the United States assumes the role of a major ICC event host for the first time.
As the cricketing world awaits the revised tournament schedule, it is worth noting that England currently holds the title of defending champions, having clinched victory over Pakistan in the 2022 final in Australia.
