Press release Lahore 10 November 2023: Exciting news from the HBL Pakistan Super League! Nine players are stepping up their game for the upcoming edition after a thorough category renewal process. The tournament, set to dazzle from 8th February to 24th March 2024, promises some thrilling cricket action.

In the upgrade spotlight, Quetta Gladiators’ Naseem Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed are now shining in the platinum category, a step up from their previous diamond status. Sarfraz Ahmed has clinched the diamond spot, leaving behind his gold category. Peshawar Zalmi’s wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Haris, has joined the diamond league from gold, while pace bowler Salman Irshad has made a gold-worthy leap from silver. Multan Sultans’ pace wonders, Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah, have rightfully claimed their gold category spots after emerging as stars last year.

There’s more! Islamabad United’s Azam Khan and Faheem Ashraf have climbed to the coveted diamond category from gold. Zeeshan Zamir has transitioned from emerging to silver, while Mubasir Khan has risen to gold from the emerging category. Over at Karachi Lords, Tayyab Tahir has updated from silver to gold, and Qasim Akram has gotten a gold spot from the arising classification. Lahore Qalandars’ Kamran Ghulam and Zaman Khan have made impressive strides to the gold category from silver and emerging categories, respectively.

On the flip side, some players are stepping down. Mohammad Nawaz (Quetta, Platinum to Diamond), Mohammad Hasnain (Quetta, Diamond to Gold), Haider Ali (Karachi, Platinum to Gold), and Asif Ali (Islamabad, Platinum to Diamond) have experienced a shift. It’s noteworthy that players with international representation for Pakistan can’t drop below the gold category.

The category renewal process involved franchise representatives voting for players, with a no-self-vote policy but an option to submit review requests later. The final decisions were made by a panel comprising Director – International Cricket Usman Wahla, national selection committee member Tauseef Ahmad, and Manager Partnerships Shoaib Khalid, the expert in player acquisition for HBL PSL since 2021. They considered factors like national team performances, domestic achievements, and T20 brand value in determining local players’ categories.

Next up, franchises will submit relegation requests before finalizing player retentions. If a player’s base category isn’t matched, they risk being relegated to a lower category. Also, U23 players can’t stay as Emerging players for more than two years unless they’ve played nine or fewer matches in that period.
